How to Improve Shopify SEO
A practical Shopify SEO checklist covering titles, structure, content, speed and indexing, with no tricks.
Shopify handles a lot of technical SEO for you. The work that moves rankings is mostly page titles, page structure, useful content and internal linking. Here is the order to do it in.
1. Fix your titles and meta descriptions
Every product, collection and page has a search engine listing section. Write a title under about sixty characters that leads with the phrase people search, and a description under about a hundred and sixty characters that gives a reason to click.
2. Give each page one clear H1
Most themes use the product or collection title as the H1. Check that your homepage has one H1 and that hero text is not marked up as multiple headings.
3. Write collection copy that answers questions
Collections often rank better than products because they match broader search intent. Two or three helpful paragraphs on a collection page can outperform a new blog post.
4. Build internal links
- Link from blog posts to relevant collections
- Link related products to each other
- Keep your main menu shallow so important pages are two clicks from the homepage
5. Sort out images
- Descriptive file names
- Alt text that describes the product
- Compressed images so pages load quickly
6. Submit your sitemap
Add your domain to Google Search Console and submit yourstore.com/sitemap.xml. Then watch Pages to see what Google indexes and what it skips.
Do not chase tricks
Hidden keyword text, doorway pages and thin duplicated pages get filtered. Fewer, genuinely useful pages beat hundreds of thin ones.
