How to Test Your Shopify Checkout

Run a full end-to-end checkout test before launch so you never discover a broken payment on your first real order.

Testing checkout takes ten minutes and prevents the most expensive kind of mistake. Do it before launch and after any change to payments, shipping or apps.

1

Decide how to test

Either place a real low-value order with your own card and refund it, or enable Shopify test mode with the bogus gateway if available for your setup.

2

Add products to the cart

Include a variant product and, if you sell them, an oversized item so shipping rates are exercised properly.

3

Check shipping and taxes

Enter a domestic address and an international address. Confirm rates appear and taxes are calculated as expected.

4

Complete payment

Pay and confirm you reach the thank you page. Try an accelerated checkout such as Shop Pay too.

5

Check the notifications

Confirm the order confirmation email arrives, then fulfil the order and confirm the shipping confirmation arrives.

6

Refund and tidy up

Refund the test order, cancel it, and delete test customer records if you created them.

Watch out

If you used test mode, turn it off before launching. Real orders placed in test mode never take payment.
