How to Create Product Collections in Shopify

Build manual and automated collections so shoppers can browse your catalogue the way they think about it.

Collections are how customers browse. A store with good collections feels organised and gives you extra pages that can rank in search.

Manual versus automated

  • Manual: you choose each product. Best for curated edits and small ranges.
  • Automated: products join when they match conditions such as tag, price or product type. Best for large catalogues.
1

Go to Products then Collections

Click Create collection in your Shopify admin.

2

Name the collection like a customer would

Use the phrase a shopper would search, such as Waterproof Walking Boots rather than Range B.

3

Choose the collection type

Pick Manual to add products yourself, or Automated and set conditions. Choose whether products must match all or any condition.

4

Add a description and image

Write two or three sentences that help shoppers and search engines understand the collection, and add a collection image for theme sections.

5

Set the product sort order

Best selling and manual ordering both work well. Manual lets you push hero products to the top.

6

Complete the search listing

Edit the search engine listing to set a clear page title and meta description.

7

Add the collection to navigation

Go to Online Store, then Navigation, and add the collection to your main menu so it can actually be found.

Tag as you go

Consistent product tags make automated collections effortless later. Decide a tagging convention before your catalogue grows.
