How to Set Up Shipping in Shopify

Create shipping zones and rates that cover your costs without scaring customers away at checkout.

Shipping is where a lot of new stores lose money or lose sales. Shopify organises shipping into profiles, zones and rates. Get those three concepts right and the rest is straightforward.

How Shopify structures shipping

ConceptWhat it does
ProfileA group of products that share shipping rules
ZoneThe countries or regions you ship to
RateThe price the customer pays in that zone
1

Open shipping settings

Go to Settings, then Shipping and delivery.

2

Set your shipping origin

Confirm the address you ship from. Carrier calculated rates and taxes depend on it.

3

Create your shipping zones

In your general profile, click Create zone and group regions with similar costs, for example domestic, then a separate international zone.

4

Add rates to each zone

Add a flat rate, a price-based rate, a weight-based rate, or carrier calculated rates. Weight-based rates need product weights to be accurate.

5

Add a free shipping threshold

Create a price-based rate from your threshold upward with a cost of zero, and name it clearly, for example Free shipping over 75.

6

Handle oversized items with a custom profile

Create a custom shipping profile, add the bulky products and give them their own rates so they do not distort your standard shipping.

7

Set up local pickup or delivery

Enable pickup at your locations, and add local delivery with a radius and minimum order value if you serve a nearby area.

8

Test at checkout

Add products to the cart and check rates for a domestic address, an international address and an oversized item.

Watch out

If a customer sees no shipping rates at checkout, their address is almost always outside every zone you created, or the product has no weight for a weight-based rate.
